Vista SP1 – that sinking feeling again (Error Code 800B0100)

Error Code 800B0100 - when upgrading to Vista SP1 - What to do? You stare at the number: 800B0100, and it doesn't say anything meaningful. General Error 800B0100. Help!

Microsoft Vista error code 800B0100 when trying to install SP1

The problem with early adopters is that we just can't help ourselves. We jump in, head first, and when some new kit or software comes out, we can't wait and we just have to try it out. Then we moan and complain and scream to the heavens (as we should) that it's just not good enough. No one works better for this gig than our frenemy Microsoft.

Imagine then how proud I was when Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista came out and I didn't touch it.

The bruises are still unhealed from the full seven working days and nights that it took to resolve all the conflicts on Vista when it first came out. This time I decided to wait. A little.

But today, two months down the line, I just had to give it a go, and guess what: "Failed: 1 update, Errors found, code 800B0100".

The Internet is abuzz with this magic number 800B0100. and no salvation from Microsoft yet (to be fair, they did issue some solutions, but none of them worked for me, and it seems neither did they work for most of the techno-kin out there).

Faced with the prospect of reinstalling Vista (and potentially hours on the line to that call centre again), I opt out this time.

Code 800B0100 UPDATE (27 Jun 08):
After weeks of research this is what I now know:
a. Code 800B0100 is most likely to be a result of corrupted registry entries.
b. Sometimes it is also a result of a corrupted windows updater.
c. Some reports say that it may be the cryptography service.

There are supposedly some methods that work for some people, and if you run a few searches (especially for option b.) you may get your own personal salvation (I may add some references here later. It's late at night and I've been fighting with Windows all day).

The bottom line for me was that none of the advertised solution worked, and finally I decided that with a corrupted registry affected by a very high number of different applications, the only way to solve the problem was a complete re-install of Windows Vista.

So there - that was the only thing that solved my problem. How was it for you? Do feel free to leave messages and any solution that worked for you here. This post is proving very popular, and you could potentially help some poor soul who's out there in the cold still scratching their heads with befuddlement.
