Appreciate your frank advise about the overnight stay. I was under the impression that i would be nice but with a family (all adults) in the desert might not be as relaxing as it sounds! Thanks for the tip and keep writing!

Danny, thank you so much on your information about the overnight safari. I'm going to Dubai for just two days next month and I'm a single female traveler (27), so I found your information very useful. I was already wondering if I'm keen on sleeping with loads, or (even worse) just a few, strange (snoring) men in a tent. So I guess I'll just do the normal evening safari. Haider, do you have any suggestions on cheap hotels? I usually stay at backpackers, but there aren't really any in Dubai. Would I rather stay in the city centre or somewhere close to the beach? Is it hard to get around if I'm not close to a metro station?

Kathy, a few corrections. If you wish to explore further (not future).
I forgot to mention the Mall of Emirates that has a nice Ice rink and an indoor ski slope that your kids will love.

Kathy, I live in Dubai and there are a huge number of luxirious hotels in Dubai including the Atlantis, Jumeirah Beach Hotel, The Royal Mirage, Emirates Towers, Grand Hyatt, Fairmont. I personally would recommend the Jumeirah Beach Hotel that offers amazing luxury with access to the Burj Dubai (7star hotel), unlimited entry to the wild wadi water park right next to it. The hotel is very close to some of the most amazing shopping malls in dubai. In addition, you get access to amazing beach. Also, you can enjoy the better part of Dubai. If you wish to explore future, you can try the Big Bus Tower that operates from Mall of Emirates (5 minutes drive from the hotel). Please do not walk if you have kids.
For the desert safari, try the Al Boom tourism or the Lama Desert tours.
Hope you will have a great time in Dubai.

I just read your info and have decided not to do the overnight stay with my three kids. we would be interested in an authentic stay. Can you recommend an area or hotel for a family who are first time to Dubai?

Hi Bob,

AlRub AlKhali (the "empty quarter") doesn't really have a defined beginning or end, so UAE is defined to be on its fringes, and as you drive into the dunes, you go deeper into it. Having said that, a 40 minute drive out of Dubai isn't "deep desert" by any stretch of the imagination. It's a tourist friendly 'toe in the water' if you like.

I deliberately did not mention the name of the company, because they all did pretty much the same. Search for "Dubai desert safari review", and I'm sure you'll find at least a dozen companies that do exactly the same. Ours was not outstanding, but the spiel was more or less the same for them all.

I hope this helps,

(That) Danny

Im thinking of going to the UAE soon. Did your tour go into Rub Al Khali (the empty quarter) of the desert, and could you tell me the name of the company you went with

Thanks
