3G iPhone will launch in the UK at the same time as in 21 other countries - on July 11. The new iPhone, which is curvier with a full plastic back and solid metal buttons, boasts faster 3G networking and an improved battery life of 300 hours. Its launch was announced today by Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
In parallel to the new 3G iPhone, a social application for iPhone called Loopt was also announced. The free application will connect users with their friends by using location technology built in to the iPhone, Like Google Maps, Loopt will drop pins onto a map showing users where their friends are.
Apple also announced MobileMe,with the following blurb to describe it: Exchange for the rest of us: You might have a Mac at home, a PC at work, and an iPhone or iPod touch. The challenge is keeping multiple devices always in sync. Some companies use a server like Exchange. For everyone else, now there’s MobileMe. Works With Native Applications: MobileMe works with the applications you know well. Microsoft Outlook on a PC. Mail, Address Book, and iCal on a Mac. And Mail, Contacts, and Calendar on your iPhone or iPod touch. Your desktop everywhere. Access and manage your email, contacts, calendar, photos, and files at me.com. All with amazing applications that are so feature-rich and easy to use, you may end up preferring them to your regular desktop applications.
Some reminders for those of us who aren’t smug owners of iPhones:
1. In the UK You can only get them on the O2 network.
2. O2 has run out of the old model, so although prices are likely to drop, you aren’t likely to get any until the new 3G iPhone hits the stores..
3. There is not yet any pricing information for the UK, but though prices are expected to go down (in the US, the announcement boasted: ”twice as fast for half the price”), I would be surprised if it really was half the price in the UK.
A final thought: shouldn’t there be a law stopping the sort of exclusive tie-up that Apple has with O2 (and AT&T in the US) – an agreement to only distribute iPhones through them? Isn’t it against the Apple ethos in the first place? What was the Apple ethos again?
UPDATE (11June): O2 has released UK pricing information for the new 3G iPhone:
£45/£75 per month plans –> Free 3G iPhone
£30/£35 per month plans –> £99 for the 3G iPhone
Prices are yet to be released for Pay-as-you-go.
